Mathematical Modeling of Gas Separation Process with Flat Carbon Membrane
Authors
Abstract:
Carbon molecular sieve membranes (CMSMs) have been considered as very promising candidates for gas separation, in terms of separation properties as well as thermal and chemical stability. Due to the numerous advantages and wide applications of carbon membranes, their application for gas separation is of special importance. Because of the importance of carbon membranes and a large number of studies in the field of carbon membrane fabrication, in this study, mathematical modeling of the gas separation process in CMSMs has been investigated. Flat configuration is considered for the membrane, which has been applied for the separation process of CH4 and C2H6. The Runge-Kutta method has been applied in order to solve the model. In the mentioned model, the sorption-diffusion mechanism has been considered as a dominant one for gas separation with CMSM. By comparing theoretical results with experimental ones for binary diffusion, good agreement was obtained. Finally, the effect of some parameters such as effective area of the module, module temperature, total feed pressure and feed flow rate on the purity of components in the retentate and permeate stream and recovery of fast components in the permeate stream have been investigated. Results demonstrated that increasing the effective area, membrane temperature and total feed pressure increased the recovery of the fast component in the permeate side, while the feed flow rate had an adverse effect.

full textMathematical Modeling of Gas Separation in Flat-sheet Membrane Contactors
Gas-liquid membrane contactors offer several practical advantages including high surface area per unit volume; independent control of gas and liquid velocities without any flooding, loading, weeping, or foaming, pre-determined gas–liquid interfacial area, membrane modules, capability of linear scale-up; low corrosion problems, and low operation and capital costs. Two common types of membrane co...
full textModeling and Experimental Study of Carbon Dioxide Absorption in a Flat Sheet Membrane Contactor
comIn the present study, CO2 removal from natural gas stream has been studied using a flat sheet membrane contactor. A three dimensional mathematical model is developed to describe the process. The model considers the transport of a gas mixture containing carbon dioxide and methane through a flat sheet membrane contactor module. The model is based on the non-wetted mode of operation, in which t...

A model is developed for separation of multicomponent gas mixtures in a countercurrent hollow fiber membrane module. While the modelâs solution in countercurrent module usually involves in a time consuming iterative procedure, a proper initial guess is proposed for beginning the calculation and a simple procedure is introduced for correcting the guesses, hereby the CPU time is decreased ess...

A mathematical model is described and applied for adsorption process of ethyl acetate from supercritical CO2 stream on activated carbon particles. This model has the ability of illustrating variation of effluent concentration towards different parameters such as flow rate, temperature and pressure. In this research, a vast area of operational conditions is experienced. Mass transfer resistance ...
full textModeling Multicomponent Gas Separation Using Hollow-Fiber Membrane Cohtactors
A model developed for multicomponent gas separation using hollow-fiber contactors permits simulation of cocurrent, countercurrent, and crossflow contacting patterns with permeate purging (or sweep). The numerical approach proposed permits simulation to much higher stage cuts than previously published work and provides rapid and stable solutions for cases with many components, with widely varyin...
